The family of Mohamed Bouazizi, the young Tunisian from Sidi Bouzid whose act of self-immolation triggered the Tunisian Revolution, has a message for the families in Libya who have lost their loved ones to the violent repression of protesters. Bouazizi, a 26-year-old street vendor, set himself on fire on 17 December 2010 after police abused and humiliated him. He died of his burns on 4 January 2011. Menobia Bouazizi, Mohamed’s mother, recorded this message for their families. Her family sent the video to Al Jazeera.
Menobia Bouazizi: The mothers of the martyrs, may God Almighty give you strength and patience. I tell the people of Libya: May God help you. I hope you will get everything you wish for. God willing, Libya will be a free country. We hope your dictator will leave, just as Ben Ali has left.
