Earlier this year, despite widespread protest, President Joe Biden signed legislation forcing TikTok’s owner “to sell it or face a nationwide prohibition in the United States”.

As U.S. lawmakers’ agitation over TikTok culminates in a law that threatens a nationwide ban if the social media platform isn’t sold to a U.S. buyer within nine months, an emergent media narrative finds a silver lining.

This blatant political chicanery would penalize political speech protected by the First Amendment.

The READER Act would have required vendors to rate books on “explicitness” before selling to schools—and blacklisted those that didn’t comply.

This bill, which was introduced by Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), would violate the First Amendment rights of hundreds of millions of Americans who use the app to communicate and express themselves daily.
