The Trump administration has cut staff, funding at agencies that track foodborne illnesses.

By Aug. 21, the Cyclospora outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce sold by Taylor Farms had sickened 10,930 people in 17 states, hospitalized 454 and killed two. The illnesses began June 14 and continued through Aug. 11.

Nearly 7,000 cases are confirmed or under investigation across 34 states since May 1, and states have reported at least 180 hospitalizations.

The ruling issued Friday by federal District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, overturning approval of the abortion pill mifepristone by the Food and Drug Administration, is the most flagrant attack on the democratic right to abortion since the Supreme Court’s decision last summer to overturn Roe v. Wade.
