From the descriptions given by the soldiers, one comes to grasp the logic of Israeli operations overall. The testimonies leave no room for doubt: while it is true that the Israeli security apparatus has had to deal with concrete threats in the past decade, including terrorist attacks on Israeli citizens, Israeli operations are not solely defensive. Rather, they systematically lead to the de facto annexation of large sections of the West Bank to Israel through the dispossession of Palestinian residents.
Breaking the Silence is an organization of veteran Israeli soldiers working to raise awareness about the daily reality in the Occupied Territories. To date, the organization has published six booklets: Breaking the Silence: Soldiers’ Testimonies from Hebron, 2004; Testimony Collection #1 (which deals with cases of IDF soldier abuse, violence, and looting in the Territories); Testimony Collection #2 (which discusses rules of engagement in the Territories); Soldiers’ Testimonies from Hebron, 2005-2007; Soldiers Tell About ‘Operation Cast Lead,’ Gaza, 2009; and Breaking the Silence — Female Soldiers Testify about Their Military Service in the Territories.
