NLG Queer Caucus and the NLG National Office are excited to share an extended and updated “Teaching for Belonging” guide for educators! As the back-to-school season begins, we want LGBTQ+ teachers, students, and their comrades to know that the NLG has their backs!
Created by the Erasure Resistance Project of the NLG Queer Caucus, supported in part by a grant from the National Lawyers Guild Foundation, this Know-Your-Risks (KYR) manual aims to empower all educators to resist anti-LGBTQ+ policies, and to advocate for LGBTQ+ students as well as themselves. This manual is not just for teachers in states with active anti-LGBTQ+ laws, but also those who teach in schools and districts without restrictions but fear facing adverse consequences for maintaining truly inclusive classrooms in these times.
This manual helps educators understand the risks they currently face by:
- Reviewing this moment of anti-LGBTQ+ legal backlash and codification, and how we got here,
- Providing an overview of federal and state protections for educators,
- Providing testimonials from educators currently resisting the exclusion of LGBTQ+ students and topics in their schools.
We hope that this school year is filled with opportunities for teachers to teach about queer liberation, and that all LGBTQ+ students feel supported by their teachers and schools.
In solidarity,
NLG National Office
