In the wake of Donald Trump’s election, Nancy Mace, a far-right representative from South Carolina, has been the figurehead for a move to ban transgender people from using restrooms on Capitol Hill that correspond to their gender.

Once the natural home of LGBT+ activists, Labour’s latest policy shifts show that instead of challenging the right-wing media’s anti-trans frenzy, the party is joining in.

Representatives of Cuban LGBTI activism and friends from other countries joined the parade calling for “All rights for all people”, organized by the National Center for Sex Education (Cenesex) as part of the Cuban Days against Homophobia and Transphobia, May 3-18.

Threats of violence by neo-Nazis grow in tandem with the “official” attacks. Incursions by hate groups aimed at queer events and spaces are becoming more common even in “safe” cities like Los Angeles and Boston. 

Melinda Butterfield: “As I sat in Miami, I was keenly aware that Gov. Ron DeSantis was preparing to sign several laws aimed at banning trans people from public life and getting the health care they need to live.” (DeSantis did sign these laws just a few days later, not by coincidence, on May 17 – the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia.)

There is a dangerous escalation of transphobia happening right now. The political right in the United States and the United Kingdom are rolling back civil rights for trans people specifically and LGBT people more broadly. This is being driven by an amalgamation of mainstream conservative parties, the far right, Christian fundamentalists and right-wing shock jocks and tabloids.

Trans people, and especially youth, are under attack in state capitols across the U.S. And the most egregious attack so far has come in a state that is a stronghold of the neofascist takeover of the Republican Party – Texas.
