Obrador Will Contest Elections before the Electoral Tribunal [Impugnará AMLO elecciones ante el TEPJF]

Mexico.  Andrés Manuel López Obrador, presidential candidate of the For the Good of All coalition, announced that he will go — at the time and in the manner set by law — to the Electoral Tribunal to contest the presidential elections, with regard as much to the conduct on the election day as to ballot counting.

Obrador also summoned his supporters and followers to an informational assembly next Saturday at 5 PM in the Constitution Square [Zócalo] of Mexico City, where he will present a detailed report on what happened during the entire electoral process.

At the moment when the IFE (Federal Electoral Institute) entered 99.36 percent of the 130,000 election certificates in its books, whose numbers maintained a slight difference of 0.39% in favor of the PAN candidate, Felipe Calderón, López Obrador indicated at a press conference that he does not accept such results because he has knowledge of many irregularities in the process.

Obrador declared: “We have all the information about little transparency in the elections and the lack of independence of the authorities and their refusal to open the electoral packets [from polling stations, which contain all materials used and gathered in the elections].  We will prove everything in the proceedings” before the Federal Electoral Tribunal.

In his campaign headquarters, Obrador emphasized that both the call for the Saturday assembly and the Electoral Tribunal challenge are acts equally “marked by responsibility.  We will always act responsibly but we must also defend the will of the people.  Neither the government nor the PAN candidate had the democratic will, and there are many doubts on the performance of the IFE in all this process.”
