It would be so simple to solve the security crisis for travelers to the USA. Why not take a lesson from East Germany where, before the more modest West German vacationers came and objected, beaches along the Baltic and most big lakes were always crowded with nudist bathers and campers? Everybody flying to the USA should simply strip down to the basics before getting aboard. Take it all off! Of course, since many Americans are probably a bit more prudish than East Germans were, there would be separate gangways and a dividing curtain in the middle of the cabin — left for the gents, right for the ladies (including stewards and stewardesses). No more worries, no more problems. Obama could turn to other matters. There are enough of them just waiting for attention.
Victor Grossman, American journalist and author, is a resident of East Berlin for many years. He is the author of Crossing the River: A Memoir of the American Left, the Cold War, and Life in East Germany (University of Massachusetts Press, 2003).
