Kayed al-Ghoul: Israeli Aggression on Gaza and Lebanon Likely in the Event of an Attack on Iran

Kayed al-Ghoul, a member of the Central Committee of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, says that, in the event of aggression against Iran, the Occupying Power will likely attack the Gaza Strip and Lebanon to prevent any reactions and to disarm the resistance forces.

Al-Ghoul remarked in an interview televised by Al Arabiya: “We in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine oppose any US or Israeli aggression on Iran, or any other country in the region.  We believe that their goal is to bring all in the region to their knees, in order to subjugate the region according to the US strategy and Israel’s role in it.”

Al-Ghoul asserted that it is mistaken to say that a strike against Iran is inevitable now, because Iran, the US, and Israel are for the moment assembling their cards and putting pressures on each other to reach some compromise.  However, he also noted that, if the pressures fail to produce such a compromise, a war will become likely despite the many complexities facing the US government which explain its frequent indecision, whether in the war in Afghanistan, problems that may arise in Iraq, or other areas in the region.

Regarding the aim of the conference held in Tehran with the participation of the Palestinian resistance factions, al-Ghoul said: “As indicated by its title, the conference is about solidarity with Palestine at national and Islamic levels, and thus the conference is part of the support for the Palestinian people and their steadfast resistance.  Especially in light of what is happening to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Ibrahimi Mosque, the Bilal Mosque, as well as the acceleration of settlement building in all areas of the West Bank, we need the support of all Arabs and all friends of the Palestinian people.  The Palestinian cause is the cause of Arabs and Muslims, and we take part in this conference in this dimension.”

In response to the question about a rumor that the Palestinian factions are to leave Syria in the event of new negotiations between Syria and Israel beginning under American auspices, al-Ghoul said: “We assess Syria based on its positions.  So far there is nothing that suggests that pressures will be put on the resistance factions to leave Syria.  We have not been told that Syria may take such a step.  We recognize the Syrian national dimensions determining Syria’s position on the Palestinian issue, which have made for strong ties to the Palestinian cause regardless of Syria’s relationship with the US government.  Even if Syria had good relations with the US government, the same would still apply to the relationship with the Palestinian forces in whose presence on Syrian territory Syria is interested, and it does not contradict its interests in the relationship with the US government.”
